Carbon Fibre Fabrication

My first year at Georgia Tech, I worked on a two stage experimental solid rocket called Rubber Band Man. I was part of making a carbon fiber airframe and fins for the sustainer section of the rocket. Having a carbon fiber sustainer cut the rocket's mass and allowed the team to hit a higher altitude.

The project was very hands on. I spent days laying carbon fiber sheets and gluing them together with epoxy. Afterwards I worked with bondo putty and fine sandpaper to smooth out dents on the airframes surface. The final product was half of the mass of our traditionally used fiber glass airframes and was aesthetically pleasing.
